1) YACHT CLUB LOCATION

We have selected Higuerillas Yacht Club (CYH) (www.higuerillas.cl) as venue for the 2005 Worlds, after much work and analysis our decision was based on the believe that this venue will provide lots of fun and excellent sailing conditions. The yacht Club is shown in the following aerial photograph.

CYH is located in Con-Con, a small town right next to Valparaiso and Viña del Mar in central Chile, 90minutes drive from Santiago international airport.  If you look a  map, you will see 3 cities along the Pacific shoreline a little northwest of Santiago.  From south to north the cities are Valparaiso, Viña del Mar and Con-Con.  In the old days they were separate towns, but nowadays they a a single metropolitan area.

(for a zoom in, it is better to download it by right clicking on the image and save it on your PC)

The Club has a nice marina and plenty of space to accommodates the boats.  There will be 3 cranes and a ramp to be used during the worlds.  Plenty of support boats, boat repair facilities, protest room, an excellent restaurant, swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.

4) HOUSING

Regarding housing, in Viña del Mar and Con-Con there are plenty of alternatives, from 5 stars hotels to motels and bread & breakfast, some just across the street from the Club. We will be sailing in the second half of November (around Thanksgiving), which is low season for us, so we should be able to get low prices. We are making arrangements with 2 or 3 hotels of different price ranges to keep everybody together. (for more information click here)

5) Transportation

From abroad you must fly to Santiago, There are many alternatives from USA, Canada and Europe. American airlines, Lan Chile, United, Air France, Iberia, Swiss, Alitalia among others. Most of the flights to Santiago are overnight and arrive early in the morning. There will be a bus once a day to take competitors and gests from the airport to CYH. It is also possible to rent a car at the airport if you want to, please contact Hertz or Avis for a quote. If you miss the bus, it is also possible to hire a shuttle to CYH at the airport. From the airport to the Club is about 1h, 40m. (more information will be posted on the web)

6) Bring your boat OR CHARTER A BOAT

If you plan to bring your boat, and we strongly recommend you to do so because there are very limited good quality boats available, you should ship it to VALPARAISO port. The Organizing Committee will be in charge of towing the boats or bringing the containers from the port to the yacht Club and back to the port. We have also made arrangements with Carlo Rossi´s customs agency in VALPARAISO to handle all paper work and assist you in this matter. The contact is:

Custom Office web site: www.rossi.cl

Contact: Carlo Rossi

e-mail: agencia@rossi.cl

Phone number: +56 (32) 200 900

As a guideline, the cost of the paper work at the Chilean Custom Office is about USD120 per boat. Another USD120 are required for handling and USD 60 for insurance of the container (these last costs (USD120+USD60, per container, so they are divided between the number of boats inside the container).

To get the boat off customs on time, the Bill of Landing (B/L) is needed at least 7 days before the ship arrives to Valparaiso. Please make your to Fedex the B/L to the customs agency on time to avoid an extra charge for yard storage, and to give us the opportunity to take your  boat immediately to the Yacht Club. In the B/L or in an attached document, it should be described the boat hull number and details of goods inside the container (masts, trailers, sails, and others).

If you want to charter a boat, there will be competitive boats in excelent conditions for CHARTER to European teams in first place, so early booking is recommended (Contact District Commodore).

When you hire the shipping company, you must request that The Shipping Contract says that the containers will be unconsolidated once they are at the port in Chile. This Clause is known, in technical language, as Less Container Load (LCL). All it means, is that once the container arrives to Valparaiso, the shipping company will download the boats from the container (unconsolidate the container) and pass the boats to the Organizing Committee who will tow them to the Yacht Club. The standard size for a towing ball in Chile is 1 7/8 inches, if your trailer has a different size, please let us know in advance. Finally, once your boat is ready to leave, we will tow it back to the port, where a local company will upload it into the container (consolidate the container). This service should be hired by you thru your customs agency (i.e. Carlos Rossi Agency if you follow our advice)

7) Sailing Conditions

Air temperature in November is around 80 degrees (25-28ºC) during the day, and drops to low 60´s at night. Water temperature is about 60 degrees (16ºC). Relative humidity is approximately 60%. The wind in November is usually from the south-southwest (180º to 220º). In the morning you can expect light to medium air from 7 to 12 knots. Increasing in the afternoon to medium to heavy (13 to 25 knots). The waves are quite big and you can expect anything from 2 to 6 foot in high and 10 foot apart. There are 3 alternative sailing areas, depending on wind and waves conditions. Current is not an issue on the course. Make sure to bring adequate sailing clothes. Unless you are the skipper, boots, trousers and top are a must!
